So you’ve had a website developed… have you ever wondered how quick or slow your pages load? Well, here is a tutorial on how to test your website speed. We will show you how to test your web pages on two popular platforms.
A slow website will not only effect how search engines rank your website, but customers won’t hang around waiting for your page to load either. If you want to work your way to page 1 this will have an impact. First we will do a test on GTMetrix.
Sitting at your desk loading your homepage and setting a stopwatch is no way to test how fast (or slow) you webpage is loading. Below it a text step-by-step process of how to test your website speed.
Many different factors can effect the speed of your page load, so using speed test platforms is a great way to accurately test the page load speed.
Launch your preferred web browser and go to GTmatrix website where you should see an ‘Analyze Performance of:’ search bar. Before starting text complete step 2 below.
With the GTmetrix test you must first create a free account. Once you have created an account go to User Setting (top right of page, blue text), scroll towards the bottom of the page and under the heading Analysis Options select the ‘Default Test Server Region’ for your location. This is very important.
Next, return to website homepage GTmatrix where you should see an ‘Analyze Performance of:’ search bar. Enter the web address (URL) of the webpage you would like to test and hit the Analyze button at the end of the search bar.
Wait for the process to complete, it shouldn’t take too long, usually about 30 seconds. You will then see your speed results. As you will see there is a lot of information on how you can improve your page load time.
Below we will go through the steps on how to test your website speed on the Pingdom platform.
Once again launch your preferred web browser and go to Pingdom website where you should see a URL search bar similar to GTMetrix site. As you may have noticed there is a test server region pull-down menu next to the URL search bar called ‘Test from’.
Select your preferred region and hit the START TEST button. After about 30 seconds your should see your text result, Pingdom give you a Performance grade, load time and Improve page performance results.
As you will notice the results between GTMatrix and Pingdom do vary slightly but it will give you a bit of an idea of how your visitors/customers are experiencing your webpage load speed. Feel free to try the test multiple times on each of these platforms and see what results you get.
